Well, actually, we need him more as an independent journalist. If you are not following his special commentary series then you deserve to be spied on, lied to, and terrified of 'the post-9/11' world. (OK, no one deserves those things, but if you aren't watching Countdown you are likely to think those things are in your best interest.)

The latest is another gem:

There is tonight no political division in this country that he and his party will not exploit, nor have not exploited; no anxiety that he and his party will not inflame.

There is no line this President has not crossed — nor will not cross — to keep one political party, in power.

The comparison to the pro-slavery forces is apt. They did anything and everything to exploit racism and fear to silence all dissent on the issue and, in doing so, keep pro-slavery advocates in the White House.

The political tide will turn, just as it did in the nineteenth century. Americans will wake up and realize they've been had by greedy, cynical, incompetent partisans. Just as Abolitionists won their day with reasoned arguments and appeals to what makes us decent, so too will Progressives now. The bigotry and the fear will not last forever.
