Median

The midpoint, or middle, of a distribution. By definition, the median is the point at which 50% of the cases fall below and 50% fall above.

The median is often used to describe the typical income because it is more representative than the average, or mean, income. The average is pulled upwards because of a few very high incomes at the top of a distribution.
